Perceptions on Libraries

When I was reading the e-reading 'Perceptions on Libraries' for class I thought of the reasons that I personally do not frequent the public library more than I do. When in college I went to the school library all the time because I knew that the librarians would be able to help me out. But not only would they help me out, they would do it willingly and enthusiastically. Never have I had that experience at a public library. When I go to a library, I do not want to have to figure out the system and search the rows and rows of books and information, that is what the librarian is for. I want to go in, tell the librarian what I am looking for or what I need and have them find it for me or get me started in the right direction. Most of the librarians that I have come across however always seem put out that I have asked them for help. I have had them ask me to wait while they finish putting books away, or finish something on the computer. I have had them tell me that I can look that up for myself using the computers available. They hardly ever smile or even seem a little arrogant. And the problem seems to be across the board, not just one branch. Why are librarians so unaccommodating? That's what they are there for. When I go into a library I prepare ahead of time to have to deal with these people and get my fierceness (is that even a word) up to have to demand them to look it up for me, or show me the process, but they WILL help me. I don't get attitude from a search engine and I don't get attitude from a salesperson at a bookstore. Perhaps customer service should be a course that is required for future librarians!!
